When politicians discuss ways to lower healthcare costs, one common refrain you will hear is that there needs to be “tort reform.” Tort reform is simply a nicer way of saying that restrictions should be placed on the amount of money a person can recover in a lawsuit after being hurt by a doctor’s negligence or having a family member killed as a result of substandard care provided by a doctor or hospital.

It is all-too-easy to cast blame for rising healthcare costs, and many politicians try to shift that blame to the work of a medical malpractice lawyer in Chicago who simply aims to protect patients and get them the money they deserve. The article aimed to refute this common misconception by pointing to data showing that the cost of medical malpractice has been dropping nationally for the past 10 years. According to information on malpractice claims:

  • By 2011, there were fewer than 10,000 medical malpractice claims throughout the U.S. The total amount paid out during this year was less than $3.2 billion.
  • From 2003 to 2011, there was a 40 percent drop in the number of malpractice claims paid and a 29 percent drop in the total amount of money spent on compensating victims of malpractice.
  • In a study of 387 hospitals in 2003, the average the hospitals paid for malpractice costs was just over one percent of total income. By 2011, the amount paid in malpractice costs had dropped to .6 percent of their income. This is 40 percent drop and means that hospitals are paying less than a penny of each dollar to the victims of malpractice.

Good Samaritans Killed Helping Car Accident Victims. – Blog

Recently, in one instance where observers witnessed a car crash, the passers-by got out of their vehicles to help the motorists involved in the wreck.  Unfortunately, WDRB reports that the Good Samaritans were killed within seconds by an oncoming semi-truck.  While the driver of the semi-truck may be held responsible if the truck driver was negligent in a way that caused the Good Samaritans to die, the ability of surviving family members to recover compensation for losses is likely little comfort.

What to Do After Witnessing an Auto Accident

The Good Samaritans were traveling  I-64 Westbound at around 11:40 a.m. when they witnessed the crash. The Good Samaritans reportedly pulled over immediately onto the shoulder of the road near the fast lane. The drivers got out to try to provide aid but were struck and killed.

While premiums have fallen somewhat in Europe for young men due to the EU gender ruling mandating that gender cannot be taken into account when pricing insurance, young men in the United States usually pay more than young women for car insurance because they are considered to be riskier drivers.
